Porcelain crowns are indicated in the esthetic zone when a large amount of tooth structure is compromised, and therefore the tooth needs to be protected, sealed and strengthened in the most natural way possible. Porcelain crowns mimic the color, shape and texture of natural teeth. They are the most esthetic crown available. Porcelain crowns can be used to address cosmetically flawed teeth just as veneers do. The decision between choosing to restore your teeth with porcelain crowns vs. porcelain veneers comes down to the amount of healthy tooth remaining. If the teeth are largely intact and there is enamel available, we typically bond porcelain veneers to the teeth. Conversely, if the teeth are severely broken down with dental cavities, or a large piece of tooth structure is missing, we typically recommend porcelain crowns to not only strengthen the teeth, but also provide a natural, cosmetic upgrade.
